Basic Mathematical Symbols

Mathematics is a language and the words of this language are symbols. Symbols are at the heart of mathematics. The effective way of communicating in mathematics is through the use of these symbols. This helps to minimise ambiguity in mathematical communication. These poster/transparencies are a list of some of the numerous symbols that are used in mathematics. It is not a bad idea for children to know some of these symbols at an early age, especially if they plan to study mathematics in the future. There is saying that a picture is worth a thousand words and this is what it seems when symbols are used to communicate in mathematics.

How are the 4 rules related?

This poster/transparency is designed to show how the basic operations are linked. Addition is the inverse of subtraction and multiplication is the inverse of division. By definition, multiplication can be considered as repeated addition whilst division can be described as repeated subtraction. For example, 3 x 4 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 4 + 4 + 4 and 15/3 can be described as how times 3 can be subtracted from 15. That is, 15 – 3 = 12, 12 – 3 = 9, 9 – 3 = 6, 6 – 3 =3, and 3 – 3 = 0. So 3 can be subtracted repeatedly from 15, 5 times.

The Make-up of the Real Numbers

I am yet to come across an eighteen year old who is able to tell the composition of the real number system confidently. The different sets of numbers that make up the real number system are never understood at school by most children. This poster/transparency is intended to illustrate in diagrammatic form how the real number system is made up and provide the definitions of the sets that make up the real number system. This poster/transparency is just another way of representing the real numbers and shows the nesting structure of the sets that make up the real numbers.
